| They say that I'm a vigilante, that I am the one who brings justice to these streets once again, making it safer for the common folk... I would pick up where the authorities left off. I was their savoir, their protector... their hero. They are WRONG! I am no hero... Midnight Spirit felt frustration and anger building up inside him. For the past few weeks he's been trying to control these rouge emotions, bottling them up and hoping they go away. He's been known to be unstable by the very small circle of friends he has. He would randomly snap at anyone who even breathed too heavily for his taste. Other times he would be as bright as Celestia's sun. He was a ticking time bomb just waiting to be lit.
He knew he couldn't contain this darkness inside of him any longer. They have to be vented out one way or another. Therapy only halted the darkness growing for a few moments. After a while this evil has grown resistant to that. Only pain and destruction could quench the darkness, but he couldn't make himself do what the darkness had wanted. Desperate to be free of these emotions, he decided to split himself in two. In the morning he would be the bright rays of happiness the others had seen him, and at night, he would become the spawn of destruction in an attempt to free himself from these chains.
He created a new identity, one that would be cursed by many and mistaken by some. He created his suit in the Wonderbolt's pattern, except he used black and white to blend into the shadows. Dark glasses would cover his maddened eyes. And the shadows would protect him.
It was a foggy night in Manehattan. The streets were nearly as empty as cloud covered sky. The moon and the stars were hidden behind the rainclouds. The air was getting warmer and moist. The rain would soon fall down on these cobble walkways. Midnight was standing atop the tower of a large building, ignoring his own reasoning not to go through with this. In the still air, he heard a cry. "May Celestia forgive me..." Midnight pulled down his hood and glasses. The darkness has now taken over. He leaped into the sky towards the alley where he saw a mare trapped by a stallion armed with a knife. "Perfect..." He hissed. He flew higher then dove down, speeding dangerously to the ground. With a quick change of direction, he cut between the mare and the stallion and crashed into the latter, sending him off to the street. Shadow growled in satisfaction. He felt great. Not because he saved somepony, but because of how the stallion heaved as he crashed into him. He caused pain, and the darkness was satisfied, but now he thirsted for more. The feel of causing pain, and the adrenaline pumping through his body was almost addicting. He took to the skies once again in search for a new prey.
He saw somepony from those wanted posters. He was charged of robbery and violence in public places. "No one will miss him." a voice in his head spoke. "They would be happy he is gone."
"..."
"Indeed."
Once again he gained altitude then swooped back down, this time he a bit farther from the pony. "AAAAAGGGGHHHHH!" Shadow screamed as he collided with the wanted pony. The rain fell, and that was the last thing heard that night. The next day, Midnight woke up to the whispers of his neighbors. They were talking about what had happened last night. They said that officers found two ponies knocked out on the streets. Both were heavily injured and were rushed to the hospital as soon as they were found. Hearing more about the details, Midnight was taken aback. What had he done? How would he be able to live knowing that he could hurt somepony like that again? "No! I can't do this anymore!" Midnight opened his closet to find the suit he had worn that night. Looking at it, it gave him chills. He remembered the feeling of how he rammed into both of his victims. It shocked him that he actually enjoyed that feeling before. Now the only thing he's feeling now is regret.
He ran out to start his day, and all he could hear was the story last night. To him, it was like the ponies knew he did it. The topic could be overheard everywhere he went. "Make it stop! Make it stop!" He screamed in his head. Then he overheard an elderly mare talking to her friend. "If you ask me, those two had it coming." Hearing those words, Midnight listened more closely. "One of them tried to harm a young mare and the other was a thief wanted by the authorities. I say we should thank that black-suited stallion for giving them what they deserve."
If he was only going to hurt those who deserve it, it wouldn't be so bad, would it? Criminals are taken off the street and everypony else will be safe! That was the reason he used to justify himself being Shadow Whisper. Night after night, his routine would be to become Shadow Whisper and deal with the criminals. That illusion broke on the fourth night. A few hours earlier, he met with one of his old classmates, a bully who tormented him and a few of the defenseless ponies in the class. He had a rough time because of him. It was about time he had his revenge. Ignoring his own slipping morals, he dispatched his prey mercilessly. The next morning, everypony was talking about it. Ponies claimed he was innocent and didn't deserve to get attacked by their so called vigilante hero. That was only strike one for Shadow.
Eventually he was completely consumed with hate that he started breaking public and private property at night. Now the streets were filled with his masked face on wanted posters. After seeing all those he realized that he might have gone too far. There were many times where he tried to destroy his alter ego. Shadow would disappear for a few nights and would come back aiming to break everything.
Midnight Spirit was the happiest he had been. But was that happiness worth it if he caused so many to suffer? "No, I can't let this darkness control me. I have to find a better way!" As nice as it sounded to him, he was always doing what the darkness wanted. There was no escaping now... He'd given up hope, till one day the world broke. The landscape changed, the weather, the cotton candy clouds, chocolate rain... It was chaos. Now he was merely a pawn to a darker power. Inside he cried. He couldn't believe what kind of monster he has become. A second chance is what he wanted.
Days passed (I would like to point out that at this point, in my story, Manehattan was in a faster day/night cycle, or at least it felt like it for Midnight.) and he lost all hope. He gave in to the darkness. He didn't try to reason himself out of it anymore. None of the things he did mattered. Nothing did. He merely existed.
On the day his heart turned to stone, a wave of purity turned everything back to the way it was. Midnight found himself on a hill far away from Manehattan. Looking at his reflection in a puddle, he saw the monster he had become. That wave of purity he saw before everything whited out didn't fully remove the darkness inside him. "There is no escape for me... is there?" Midnight sighed. This was the second chance he wanted. He decided to try harder to control his own evil. "I am not a monster anymore... I will persevere. I am no hero... but I can try to be..."

| This is a very interesting story. Very well thought out and original. It can be told that you have put in a lot of thought into the back story for your pony. If you are going to write more short stories, I will eagerly await your next installment!
