"My faithful student, Princess Twilight," Celestia murmured, a wing wrapped around the little ruler, "You are like the sister I never had."

Luna felt bile rise in my throat, where it stuck around the huge lump forming behind her mouth. She couldn't breathe. Celestia would actually say something like that?

"Thank you, Tia!" Twilight said gleefully, nuzzling the older sister's neck.

Celestia would not let Luna call her that aloud. Twilight... she betrayed her. Luna confessed to her the way she felt Celestia was treating her! She knew about her sister for the whole night.

The helmet fell over Luna's head, and it settled perfectly into place, following every contour of her face and muzzle. The light blue metal sent a soothing tingling through her pelt, and sheknew exactly what to do.

Celestia's head snapped towards the younger princess as the crash of metal on wood hit the ground. Her eyes followed the black crown as it rolled to her hooves, settling to the floor with a clang.

Her eyes widened in horror as she stared at Luna, but not because of the act. Purple magic swirled around the Princess, transforming her before the two other alicorns' eyes.

"So, sister," Luna cried, "you've chosen your new companion. You see us inferior to Twilight Sparkle! You've chosen where your heart lays. The beautiful, powerful, good, magnificent Celestia has cast aside her loving sister like a bundle of rags. Yes, Celestia, your sister loves you with all of her heart, but you do not return the feelings. Our bond is severed!"

As the last word was shouted, Luna's mane changed, floating upward in a cloud of stars only seen on a terrifying being from long ago.

"We are no longer Luna," the princess cried, "Celestia's poor, neglected sister. We shall take what is ours and depart thy kingdom."

"Luna, you cannot leave!" Celestia pleaded. "Even if you do, you will leave others to do your royal duty. Twilight will have to raise the stars for you!"

"No," the alicorn said darkly, "she shall not. You no longer have control of Nightmare Luna and her powers. The moon, the stars, and the night shall not return."

The princess had transformed into a terrifyingly beautiful being. She possessed all of Nightmare Moon's powers without destroying the personality of Princess Luna. Her coat was black as night at her hooves and midnight blue around her head. Her eyes were shaped like those of Nightmare Moon, but they kept the color and beauty of the pony eyes of the alicorn ruler.

Shoving past the two other rulers, Nightmare Luna ran for the window, shoving out and spitting magic from her horn.

The stars winked out, one by one. The skies started to lighten as the princess disappeared, the moon sinking below the horizon forever. The rays of sunlight started to appear over the horizon as the night ended, far too early to be normal, and the eternal day began. For with no night to save them from the sun's harsh rays, Equestria was doomed, all because of their ruler's lack of love.

The current written part (as of Midnight, June 2):

Eternal

The clop of graceful hooves on immaculately shined marble floors rang out clearly as the I, Luna, Princess of the Night, made my way swiftly towards my sister's quarters. I stopped at the door, composed myself, and knocked quietly.

"Come in," Celestia said curtly. I gently nudged the thick oak door open, and I caught sight of the Princess of the Day in a beautiful dress, writing a note, with her back turned to me.

"Sister," I started, "We were wondering if-"

"It's 'I,' Luna, not 'We,'" she corrected sharply.

I composed myself again.

"I was wondering if I may attend the ball for Princess Twilight?" I asked calmly, though I was boiling inside. Tia knew I had problems with modern Equestrian. She could at least cut me some slack.

Tia chuckled and put her quill down, sealing the note and sending it off with a burst of magic.

"Luna, it is Twilight's party. Why would you need to attend?"

"We-I did not know of the ball in my own castle until a few moments ago," I argued, hurt that she would brush my attendance aside like a fly. "I am the Princess of the Night, Tia, and it is during my rule of the skies that the party is to take place."

"Exactly, Luna," she said calmly. "Your duty is to raise the moon and the stars and to tend to the night and to ponies' dreams. You have your duties to think of, sister."

I grumbled a bit. Must parties always take place during my night? My work was done until dawn.

"It is Twilight's party, sister," I persisted. "The princess and I are good friends. Surely you would allow me to come."

"Oh, Luna," she clucked, "you can come. I just expect you not to be there."

The shock on my face registered for just a moment before I turned away and walked out of her room. When I rounded the corner, I broke into a gallop and spread my wings, flying up to the observation deck. Cursed tears ran down my face, but I wiped them away with a hoof.

Was I really not wanted by my own sister? No, that must not be it. She was surely just concerned about my duties.

I could keep the stars sparkling for an hour while I attended the ball. There would be no issue with that.

My mind made up, I trotted up to my chambers and sifted through my closet until I found a suitable gown. It was the same style of Tia's, with a skinny skirt and sleeves, decorated with shimmering stars. Regal attire for the Princess of the Night.

My confidence boosted, I replaced the crown on my head, but a light blue glint caught my trained eye. I shifted aside clothes and stared at the thing in the back of my closet.

An intricate blue helmet, made for an Alicorn, glimmered slightly in the light. There was a faint trace of old magic around it, and I was suddenly filled with old memories.

A flight over a starry sky. A black horn shooting purple magic. A cold cackle.

I slammed my closet door shut and remembered why the helmet was there. When I had been alone in this castle, I had a second helmet made in case the first broke, which it did on the night Twilight Sparkle and her friends pulled Nightmare Moon out of my personality and destroyed it. I had forgotten that the armor had remained in my room, hidden from Tia as a sign of rebellion.

No. I could not return to the old way. I was not evil. I was not a monster.

'But you aren't Tia's inferior,' a nasty little voice whispered in my head.

"No," I said aloud, not caring who heard me, "we art not inferior to thee, Celestia. We shall attend Princess Twilight's ball of our own will. We shall prove we are no better or worse than thee."

With that, I turned and confidently trotted out the room.

****
The Canterlot Symphony was playing something calming for the scores and scores of nobleponies milling about the room. Once again, I felt of pang of sadness at the fact that they had been wanted here, but not myself. I skirted around the back and tapped Twilight on the shoulder.

"Thou hast a magnificent party," I complimented freely. Twilight didn't care how I spoke. She was fine with my speech.

"Thanks," the smaller Alicorn answered, blushing. "It was really Pinkie's planning, but..."

"Pinkie Pie?" I asked curiously. "Art thy friends here, Twilight?"

"Of course," Twilight said, beaming. "I wouldn't abandon my friends for anything."

'But a mare would ignore her younger sister.'

"A Pinkie Party?" I asked. "This does not seem like one of her famous-"

"YOU DO THE HOKEY PONY AND YOU TURN IT ALL AROUND!"

The cotton candy colored mare burst around the corner, balloons and streamers flying, and the ponies applauded her arrival.

I nodded. "I spoke too soon."

"I'll need to greet the guests," Twilight said apologetically. "Shouldn't you be with Celestia?"

I shook my head. "Our sister does not want our presence at thy party. We do not want to make our sister angry."

"Why would Celestia not want you here?" she asked curiously. "You are the second of the three rulers."

"A question we tried to answer," I sighed. "Tia believes it best that we do our royal duty and answer the dreams of sleeping fillies and colts during thy party."

"That doesn't sound right," Twilight protested, frowning. "Luna, it's barely eight o'clock. Spike isn't even in bed yet."

I waved her off. "I wish to see your friends. Go with Tia and greet the guests."

She gave me a worried glance, but I nodded and cantered into the crowd to find the other Elements of Harmony.

Fluttershy spotted me first and sank to a bow.

"Princess Luna," she almost whispered. "It's a pleasure."

The others followed suit, but I held up a hoof.

"Thou hast no need to bow in our presence," I assured. "We are good friends. We have not seen thee for a very long time, Elements, and it is our pleasure to speak with you again. How fare thee?"

"We are well, Princess," Rarity answered quickly, clapping her hooves together. "This is such a magnificent party. Will you thank Twilight for us? We can't seem to find her anywhere!"

"Of course, dear Rarity," I replied. "It would be our honor."

They turned away and returned to their conversation, and I felt another pang of sadness as I watched them. I did not possess many good friends, and those I had perished long ago.

The doors opened quietly, but everypony turned towards Tia and Twilight, standing regally at the entrance. I skirted to the back, trying to keep out of sight.

The two entered, and the party resumed, some cantering up to my sister to request an audience, others returning to what they had been doing beforehand.

I noticed a wide birth around myself as I navigated the crowds. Ponies shied away from me as I walked, and I could not fathom why until I realized that they were frightened of me. It was silly. What would I do to harm them? Nothing would cause me to harm a hair on their heads.

The ball suddenly didn't seem so exciting. I retreated from the ballroom, trotting up to my quarters until I felt a hoof on my shoulder.

"Luna," Tia said calmly from behind me.

I shuddered involuntarily and turned, seeing my sister giving a disapproving glare down from her towering height over me.

"Were you at Twilight's ball?" she asked coldly.

"We-I was merely making sure all was well," I lied. "Just a quick, five minute check."

She glared at me, and I stared back, challenging her to leave first. Finally, it got too uncomfortable, and I squirmed under her grip.

"Tia, may I return to my duties?" I asked impatiently.

"Do not call me Tia," she responded sharply. "It's a derogatory nickname, unbefitting of a ruler.

"Yes, Celestia," I muttered, yanking out of her grip and trotting away.

She was treating me as an inferior. A Princess to a Queen. Am I not an equal? Am I not the other half?

I sat on my bed, contemplating my predicament. My eyes kept wandering to the helmet, until I finally caved in. I needed to tell Tia. She needed to see it.

Cantering down the hallway, I calmly waited outside of her door before gently easing it open and plodding in, holding the helmet up with magic.

Celestia sat facing away from me, Twilight wrapped in an embrace under her wing. My open mouth shut with an inauditory snap.

"My faithful student, Princess Twilight," Celestia murmured, a wing wrapped around the little ruler, "You are like the sister I never had."

I felt bile rise in my throat, where it stuck around the huge lump forming behind her mouth. I couldn't breathe. Celestia would actually say something like that?

Celestia's head snapped towards me as the crash of metal on wood hit the ground. Her eyes followed the black crown as it rolled to her hooves, settling to the floor with a clang.

Twilight

I stared at Luna, shocked, as I watched her drop her crown with a clang. Blue tears rand down her cheeks as she levitated an intricate twist of metal upwards

The helmet fell over Luna's head, and it settled perfectly into place, following every contour of her face and muzzle. The light blue metal sent a soothing tingling through her pelt, and she seemed to know exactly what to do.

Celestia's eyes widened in the same horror as my own as we stared at Luna, but not because of the act. Purple magic swirled around the Princess, transforming her before our eyes.

I faintly remembered the cold cackle of Nightmare Moon of the night of the Summer Sun Celebration, so long ago.

"We are no longer Luna," the princess cried, "Celestia's poor, neglected sister. We shall take what is ours and depart thy kingdom!"

"Luna, you cannot leave!" Celestia pleaded. "Even if you do, you will leave others to do your royal duty. Twilight will have to raise the stars for you!"

"What?" I asked in shock. "What are you talking about, Tia?"

"No," the new creature answered darkly, "she shall not. You no longer have control of Nightmare Luna and her powers. The moon, the stars, and the night shall not return."

The princess had transformed into a terrifyingly beautiful being. She possessed all of Nightmare Moon's powers, but her voice had not changed, and though the threat hung on her lips, I could hear the immense pain behind it. Her coat was black as night at her hooves and midnight blue around her head. Her eyes were shaped like those of Nightmare Moon, but they kept the color and beauty of the pony eyes of the alicorn ruler.

Shoving past Celestia, who had jumped to her hooves, Nightmare Luna ran for the window, shoving out and spitting magic from her horn.

The stars winked out, one by one. The skies started to lighten as the princess disappeared, the moon sinking below the horizon forever. The rays of sunlight started to appear over the horizon as the night ended, far too early to be normal, and the eternal day began.

I understood the terrible thing that had occurred before my very eyes, something I felt guilty for not stopping earlier, when Luna had told me. For with no night to save them from the sun's harsh rays, Equestria was doomed, all because of their ruler's lack of love.
