History: Starry Night was born in Canterlot to a socialite mother and a father immersed in the sciences. She took more after her father, much to her mother's dismay, relishing reading and learning and experimentation. The dancing and singing classes her mother put her through stuck with Starry, but the social grace and dignity of her Canterlot-born mother were lost on the daughter. Her talents were often used for simple amusement and to stage pranks, much to her mother's chagrin.
Starry's cutie-mark appeared in thanks to her father. Science and discovery was always a pursuit she was heavily invested in, but she hadn't recognized it until she first looked at the starts through a second set of eyes. Her father had gifted her a telescope shortly after she was given her first set of thick-framed glasses. She had spotted a shooting star in her first moments gazing through the telescope, and the meteor left it's likeness imprinted upon her.
The years went on, and Starry continued to learn, and to make a fool of her mother with her stunts and shenanigans. Realizing that she had become social baggage to her mother came as a surprise to Starry, but not as a disappointment. As full-fledged adults, Starry had chosen to leave home with her sister Jasmine to make a new and welcome home in Ponyville.
Example RP segment:
"Hi there, little colt!"
Starry had leaned in close to the foal, her lips upturned and her eyes wide behind her spectacles. The rain was dripping down Starry's glasses, and her mane was wet, like the foal's. Neither had thought to carry an umbrella, though the foal likely had parents who carried one for him. Starry on the other hand had no excuse.
"I'm a girl!" the filly snapped.
That caught Starry off-guard, as it should have. It was difficult to see five feet ahead of her on this deserted street, with the droplets of rain gathered over the lenses of her glasses. She was at a loss for words, and it hadn't occurred to her to raise that point in her defense.
"Oh! Um, of course! I..." the words weren't coming to her, "...never doubted you for a second!" That would have to suffice.
"What are you doing out here all alone in the rain?" Starry asked, her pitch rising on the final note.
"Everypony ran inside when it started raining, but we don't live here, and I don't know where my parents went," the filly despaired. The tears in her eyes started to distinguish themselves from the rain.
"Aww, don't cry!" Starry intervened, offering the filly a hoof, "If you don't know where your parents are, then we'll just have to find them!"
"Really?" the filly replied with relief, "does this mean we're friends?"
That had warmed Starry's heart, and her smile showed it. "Sure, friends," Starry could accept that. That's all she really wanted,
Acceptance.
