Personality:
Midnight is a very serious individual when on the job, requiring a strong sense of awareness to perform at maximum efficiency. She carries with her a great burden, which often weighs heavy on her shoulders, but it also helps inspire her to greatness.
Fearless, she'll confront any foe without hesitation, no matter how grim the situation may be. While some may call her stubborn, it is her courage that enables her to fight even when she has already lost, and the will to maintain her family's prestigious name.
Towards her comrades-in-arms, she's a soldier of high regard. While not a leader, per say, the Bat Pony is completely loyal and willing to obey orders without question. She regards her fellow fighters with respect and would happily sacrifice herself for them. While little have come to recognize such in her ranks, she's also a very strategic and intelligent individual- she just chooses not to show it.
Off-duty, Midnight is a rather calm pony. It takes a lot to rouse emotion from her, making her seem rather distant or introverted. In truth, she's always trying to maintain a certain image, less her family's name be tarnished. Deep down, the mare desires much more than her profession allows for, such as true friendship and love. But those things are kept bottled deep inside- they are troublesome wants, and would only lead her to trouble.
Or so she was taught to believe.
Likes: Combat, discipline, honor. Berries, apples (anything sweet and red). Darkness, quiet.
Dislikes: Brightness. Anything bitter. Disrespect, horsing around, dishonest or cruel individuals.
History:
Midnight comes from a long line of protectors, dating back to when Equestria was still young and a dangerous place. Even before the two Princess Sisters manifested their might to bring peace to the land, her ancestors fought for justice and freedom against the chaotic forces that existed. So when the two finally ended the creature's reign, they pledged their services to the world's saviors.
While their aid was welcome, their capabilities became hindered by the more routine schedule of the day. The sun now had its ruler and was allowed to bathe the land for hours on end, which was welcome to most of the races, for it helped them grow food and indulged them with vitamins as well. But for the Bat Ponies, the light was too much for their sensitive eyes to handle, the warmth too strong for their dark coats to cope with.
One of the new rulers, having been blessed with maintaining the night, suggested that her kind serve her only, rather than to make themselves uncomfortable by trying to please her sister as well. They were grateful for the reprieve and vowed never to fail their goddess. While the heavens were kissed with stars and beauty, danger still lurked in Equestria in the form of monsters and evil plagues. The Bat Ponies of her family helped fend off all that threatened the harmony of the world back then, and continued to do so to the present day.
Since the moment she could comprehend speech, Midnight was taught about her family's history and their responsibilities. Every story inspired a sense of pride for her namesake, while the thrilling tales of valor satiated her curiosity and made her eager to participate. It was stated that the blood of a warrior ran through her veins, and it was her sacred duty to use it.
Even as a youngster, she showed signs of greatness. While there weren't may other fillies to be compared to (or play with), her aptitude for physical prowess was top-notch. She was quick on her hooves and even faster in the air, and she prided herself on her agility on both elements. Each and every day she was forced to train on a series of obstacle courses until perfection was achieved.
When she was a bit older, Midnight began her training in combat. She was pitted against stationary straw dummies first, then gradually graduated to moving targets. While only her hooves and teeth were utilized, the effort earned her very toned muscles, which gave her quite a punch of power behind her strikes.
Later on, the Bat Pony moved on to weaponry. To be well-rounded, she was taught how to wield lances and swords, daggers and extendable knives, even the more temperamental bow and arrow. While proficient in most, she excelled in melee strikes rather than long-range missiles, for it was better partnered with her agility and speed. Noting this, the young mare dedicated her time to sharpening her skills with swords, though continued to practice with lances in her downtime.
When her training was finally complete, her family turned her over to the Night Guard. It was under their guidance that she became a true warrior of the night and had earned her family's crest in the form of a Cutie Mark. As a reward, Midnight was gifted with the armor of her ancestors to proudly wear and display. With it, she vowed to protect and to serve the goddess of the evening, as well as the civilians of Equestria from that which lurks in the shadows.

"What're you looking at?"Indeed, what was she staring at?
"I haven't decided just yet." She stated, her tone cold and darker than the shadows of the alley she was in.
The colt, taken back, started to shiver as a pair of yellow eyes fell upon him, their pupils unnaturally slit. He swallowed hard, heart pumping heavily in his chest- just what sort of creature had he stupidly roused? "Who-
What are you?" The fool demanded with a stomp in a vain attempt to regather his courage.
With some light chuckles, Midnight Bulwark advanced forward, freeing herself from the alley's shadows. She stood tall and proud, her dark gray coat sporting rich purple and blue armor.
"I am a protector of the innocent. I am the vanquisher of the evil that lurks in the night." Purposely, the young mare stopped but inches from the cowering colt, her hot breath easily felt on his snout.
"Who are you?"No words were conjured to his quivering lips, so she answered for him.
"You are nothing but a coward to prey on an innocent filly." Midnight snarled, baring her sharp fangs. The sight of them was enough to send the colt scurrying off, tail tightly tucked between his legs. Sighing, she rolled her eyes then turned to the youngster, whom had curled into a ball out of fright. At this she frowned, her ears folding back with disappointment.
"You don't need to fear-""Stay back!" Exclaimed the youth, finally finding his hooves.
Having encountered such fear before, Midnight simply nodded in defeat. Her kind wasn't welcome in most places, for few even wandered the outside world openly. But it was her duty to go where she was needed, whether the problem be great or small.
"Very well. You should go home- it's getting late, and there are worse things out there than bullies." With that, she unfolded her leathery wings and gave them a firm flap, sending her off to the heavens..
