History: Ruby Shine lived with her
loving Ponyville Earth pony mother. She gave Ruby everything she needed to become a skilled worker with metal, and the jewels whose shine she loved so much. Nopony could see it by looking at her, but she was a skilled modern-blacksmith.
Spending her younger years hunched over a anvil, she'd never dreamed of anything more than working in her mother's shop the rest of her life.
That was before the Canterlot ponies got wind of her talents.
Unbeknownst to her, Ruby's mother had sent off examples of her jewelry making to Canterlot. In days, she'd found her a benefactor, that wanted to move the teenage pony into the big city, to work at one of the prime jewelry shops there.
Ruby Shine took it without a second thought.
Since 15, she's been living in Canterlot under her benefactor. He supplied her with the starting fee for a house, and anything else she'd needed. After her things started selling, however, she needn't the money any more. Canterlot had access to all sorts of things, and even though she still spent days over and anvil to get her jewelry that polished, old-world look... She now was able to bathe and get all of the soot off of herself before stepping a hoof outside. She learned the importance of beauty and one's image, and refused to step out of the house without looking her best.
As more and more ponies flocked to Canterlot, that only gave her more and more customers. And more and more ponies to flirt with. Because, as she grew, and became a mare, Ruby got more and more beautiful. And the more she paid attention to her looks, instead of being the scroungy girl with the soot covered hooves, the more ponies noticed her. And she reveled in the attention.
Ruby Shine knew the way of things. She knew where she belonged. And that's in Canterlot, placing her best perfectly hooficured step forward at the biggest parties.
It all slightly changed when she got the call from Ponyville that her mother had passed. Suddenly her life in Canterlot was a lot less glamorous, and a lot more like a fanciful dream, to get away from things. She hid herself behind her work, and beauty. And though she longed to find somepony who would love her as much as her mother had, she knew she had to open her heart first. And that would have to be a very
very special pony.
Example RP segment: It is pouring rain outside. Your OC spots the light of a tavern up ahead. The tavern is filled with ponies that your OC doesn't know. Given your OC’s personality, compose a brief narrative in which your OC identifies and addresses the situation.
Ruby Shine groaned up at the sky.
Seriously? As if this day couldn't get any worse. She was lost, after having made a visit out into the far reaches of Canterlot city. These winding streets had her completely at a disadvantage. And now, the sky had opened up and the heavens were pouring forth, and she'd forgotten her umbrella.
She squinted, and saw a tavern's lights poking through the haze of the rain. Her eyes widened with excitement. Shelter! Food! A place to dry her hair!
She galloped towards it, rushing inside behind a pony just going inside. She gave him a shy smile as she moved off to the side, towards the fire, wringing out her hair. A quick glance around told her she knew none of these ponies. She could see in them the looks of many cultures: Some simple Ponyville natives, some Appaloosans, even a few Saddle Arabians. She frowned. It looked like it was going to be quite the private night for her.
She let her hair dry back into its perfect curls, and then walked towards the bar, sitting next to a Unicorn, apparently from Ponyville. "Hello there." She said with a smile, after ordering a cider. She could feel his eyes on her even as she took a sip.
"And you are...?"
"Ruby Shine." She said, extending a hoof. "And let me talk to you about a wonderful opportunity..."
